Vintage Gault Original French Ceramic Townhouse Sculpture

Description

A striking piece of miniature architectural art, this vintage Gault Original ceramic building captures the charm and character that have made Gault’s handcrafted houses beloved by collectors around the world.

Tall and exceptionally slender, the building features a beautifully detailed façade rendered in a sophisticated palette of charcoal black, softly weathered white, and warm terracotta. Rows of deeply recessed, multi-paned windows and traditional shutters climb the façade, leading to an ornate, shaped gable embellished with delicate scrollwork and architectural flourishes. A miniature staircase and recessed doorway at street level add wonderful dimension, while the terracotta-tiled roof provides a warm contrast to the monochromatic façade.

The sides and rear are intentionally more rustic, revealing the wonderful hand-worked texture of the ceramic and additional miniature windows and doors. The GAULT signature appears along the side of the building.

Gault Original ceramic houses originated in France in the early 1980s under artist and architect Jean-Pierre Gault. Unlike later molded resin miniatures, the original ceramic houses were entirely handmade, with individual variations in windows, doors and architectural details that make each example unique. More than 3,000 different stamps were used by Gault sculptors to create these intricate architectural elements.

Designed to stand beautifully on its own or alongside other Gault buildings to create an architectural streetscape, this particularly tall, narrow example brings wonderful vertical interest to a collection.
