This vintage Gault Original Amsterdam Gabled Canal House is a handcrafted ceramic architectural miniature made in France and inspired by the distinctive historic townhouses of Amsterdam. With its rosy brick façade, sweeping Dutch gable, tiled rooftops, and tiny architectural embellishments, the piece captures the wonderful irregularity and character of an old European streetscape.

The façade is particularly charming. A tall gabled residence rises alongside a lower adjoining structure, creating the appearance of two historic buildings nestled together. Rows of individually detailed windows are surrounded by pale trim and decorative dark wall anchors, while petite flowers spill beneath the lower windows. At street level, dark green doors and window surrounds give the building a beautifully grounded, old-world appearance. A tiny blue-and-white striped crest provides an unexpected pop of color.

And the craftsmanship doesn't stop at the façade. Turn the house around and the architecture continues across every side, with individually rendered windows, pitched terra-cotta roofs, chimneys, brickwork and hand-worked surface texture giving the miniature the feeling of a building that has stood for generations.

About Gault Original

French artist and architect Jean-Pierre Gault began developing his miniature ceramic houses in the early 1980s while living in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. Inspired by the historic European architecture travelers came to admire, Gault sought to create miniature works of art that captured the character of these buildings in three dimensions.

Unlike mass-produced architectural figurines, the original Gault houses were handmade in ceramic in France. Individual architectural elements and finishing details could vary from one example to another, giving each house its own character.

By 1991, Gault had developed eight architectural collections inspired by Provence, Paris, Alsace, London, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice and San Francisco. Amsterdam pieces are among the less commonly encountered Gault Original collections today, with Gault noting that Provence—and subsequently Paris—were produced in greater numbers than many of the other series.

This example bears the Gault France mark and showcases the wonderfully intricate brickwork, dimensional roof tiles, sculptural detailing and hand-finished patina associated with the original ceramic collection.

Whether displayed as a standalone architectural object or collected alongside other Gault houses to create an enchanting European streetscape, it is a tiny work of art that rewards a closer look.
