Vintage Gault France Parisian Townhouse Ceramic Sculpture

A tiny piece of Paris, rendered in extraordinary architectural detail. This vintage Gault France ceramic townhouse belongs to the celebrated Gault Original Paris collection, a series of miniature architectural sculptures created in France and collected around the world.

Tall and wonderfully narrow, this piece captures the elegant verticality of a classic Parisian townhouse. Its richly textured façade combines warm brown brickwork with pale stone architectural detailing, from the paneled entry and rows of miniature windows to the sculptural cornices and distinctive upper dormer. A steep roofline and beautifully modeled zinc-like roof elements give the building unmistakable old-Paris character, while the slender, angled profile makes it especially striking viewed from every side.

Far more than a molded collectible, Gault Original houses were individually handmade in ceramic. The atelier developed thousands of miniature stamps for architectural elements such as windows and doors, allowing houses sharing the same basic form to vary in their individual details. The painstaking production process involved numerous stages of forming, drying, firing, oxide washes, painting, patination and enameling.

The Gault miniature houses originated with French architect and artist Jean-Pierre Gault in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the early 1980s. After the success of the earliest Provençal designs, Gault expanded into Parisian architecture, eventually creating collections inspired by cities and regions including Paris, Provence, London, Venice, Amsterdam, Rome and San Francisco.

This example bears the distinctive GAULT signature along one side as well as impressed markings on the underside. Its restrained palette of weathered cream, charcoal, warm brown and gray gives it an especially architectural quality—almost like a three-dimensional sketch of a centuries-old Parisian building.

Beautifully displayed alone as a small sculptural object, tucked among books and collected objects, or incorporated into a larger grouping of Gault architecture, it is a wonderfully unusual piece of vintage French ceramic art and architectural design.
