This vintage 1991 Gault Original Provençal Village House is an exceptionally detailed handcrafted ceramic architectural miniature made in France. Inspired by the wonderfully imperfect stone houses found throughout the villages of southern France, it captures the romance of Provence in remarkable three-dimensional detail.

The façade is a tiny world unto itself. Weathered cream and blush-toned walls have been heavily textured to resemble centuries-old stone and stucco, while rows of sculpted terracotta roof tiles crown the irregular roofline. Petite windows, deep green shutters and doors, a tiny balcony and rustic architectural details make the house feel wonderfully lived-in.

Perhaps its most enchanting feature is the narrow exterior staircase tucked between the buildings. Tiny steps climb through a recessed passage toward an upper doorway, creating the illusion of a hidden Provençal alleyway. Look closely and you'll find still more details—a petite wall lantern, greenery cascading beside the stair, dimensional stonework and charmingly irregular windows tucked into the façade.

The artistry continues around every side. Rather than leaving the less-visible elevations unfinished, Gault rendered them with additional windows, doors and wonderfully craggy masonry texture. It is precisely the sort of miniature that invites you to pick it up, turn it around and discover something new.

About Gault Original

French artist and architect Jean-Pierre Gault began developing his miniature ceramic architecture in the early 1980s while living in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. Inspired by the historic streets and houses that enchanted visitors to the region, Gault set out to capture their architectural character in miniature.

The original Gault houses were handcrafted in ceramic rather than mass-produced as identical replicas. Gault artisans used thousands of sculpted stamps to create different windows, doors and architectural elements, and examples sharing the same basic building form could vary considerably in their individual details.

The Provence Collection became one of Gault's signature series, distinguished in part by its warm tiled roofs and architecture inspired by southern France. These original ceramic houses are especially beloved for their incredible surface texture, irregularity and old-world character.

This example is clearly marked GAULT FRANCE 1991 with the initials TC, documenting both its French origin and year of manufacture.
