“Village du Sud” — 1940s French Oil Painting by Andrée Clech Lagarron

Bathed in the soft colors of southern France, Village du Sud captures a hillside village rising dramatically above a lush, rocky landscape. Painted in oil on canvas and dating to circa the 1940s, the work is signed Andrée Clech Lagarron at the lower right.

Clustered stone houses seem to climb organically from the hillside, their warm terracotta roofs and sun-washed façades rendered in soft shades of cream, ochre, blush, and pale gray. Below, expressive strokes of olive green, deep blue-green, gold, and rust suggest the rugged vegetation and changing colors of the countryside.

There is a wonderful looseness to the painting—the architecture remains recognizable while the landscape becomes increasingly expressive toward the foreground.
