Description

WWI Trench Art Brass Vase – “The Wildflower Shell”
France, c. 1914–1918
Height: 29 cm (11.4")
Diameter: 8.5 cm
Weight: approx. 1.06 kg

An authentic World War I trench art vase crafted from a spent brass artillery shell casing, intricately transformed by hand into a decorative object. Once a military munition, this casing was later reshaped into a true work of art—a powerful example of the practice known as trench art.

The surface is almost entirely chiseled, featuring a raised floral bloom with flowing foliage set against finely worked, directional texturing. The depth of carving and near-total surface decoration make this piece especially striking, both visually and historically.

Trench art objects were created by soldiers during periods of waiting at the front, or by civilians working with battlefield remnants. These vases served as souvenirs, keepsakes, or gifts—often intended for loved ones at home.

Retained in original condition, this piece shows age-related wear consistent with its history, enhancing its authenticity and character.
