“Rue de Montmartre” — 1940s French Oil Painting by E. Ford
Description
A wonderfully atmospheric glimpse of old Paris, Rue de Montmartre captures a narrow neighborhood street winding through one of the city's most storied quarters. Dating to circa the 1940s, this French oil on canvas is signed E. Ford at the lower right.
Rather than depicting the polished grandeur of Paris, the artist turns to a quieter, more intimate view of the city. Closely gathered buildings rise along the narrow street as a handful of figures make their way through the scene, while the pale silhouette of a domed Parisian landmark appears in the distance. Muted ochres, olive greens, charcoal, cream, and touches of russet give the work the wonderfully subdued palette of a mid-century European streetscape.
The restrained brushwork and slightly hazy atmosphere lend the painting a sense of age and memory—as though catching a fleeting moment of everyday Paris nearly a century ago.
Presented in a textured gilt frame with visible age and patina, the piece has the wonderfully imperfect character we love in vintage French artwork. Areas of wear to the frame only add to its collected, timeworn appearance.
