“Echoes of Vaux” – WWI French Trench Art Shell (1917)

Description

This remarkable piece of trench art was crafted from a 75mm French artillery shell casing, dated 1917 and discovered in Normandy. The hand-etched design includes delicate foliage and the word “Vaux,” likely a tribute to the French village of Vaux-devant-Damloup—an area deeply affected by the Battle of Verdun. Its crown-like top and richly patinated brass surface speak to the artistry and sentiment of the soldier who transformed it from a weapon of war into a symbol of remembrance and resilience.

As with all of our trench art pieces, please note that similarities in design do not diminish their authenticity. Each was uniquely hand-decorated by a soldier, often using limited tools and materials found in the trenches.
