19th-Century French Painting of Le Pont d’Avignon by F. Armand

A particularly special find from our travels through Provence, this 19th-century French painting by F. Armand depicts one of southern France’s most recognizable landmarks: the historic Pont d’Avignon.

Rendered in a beautifully subdued palette of dusty rose, ochre, soft blue and atmospheric gray, the scene looks toward the ancient stone bridge as it stretches across the Rhône. Warm Provençal architecture lines the riverbank beneath an expansive, cloud-filled sky, while loose, expressive brushwork gives the landscape a wonderfully romantic quality.

The painting was acquired by Belle Maison from Thierry, an art brocanteur in L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Provence, whose shop we discovered while sourcing in France. His accompanying information identifies the artist as F. Armand, dates the work to the 19th century, and describes the subject as Le Pont d’Avignon. The work itself measures approximately 38 × 55 cm and has since been presented in a handsome gilt and black frame that complements its warm, time-softened palette.

Beyond its decorative beauty, we love this piece for its unmistakable sense of place—a genuine glimpse of Provence discovered in one of France’s great antiquing towns and brought home to Belle Maison.
