The Starflower Shell
Description
WWI Trench Art Brass Vase – “The Starflower Shell”
France, c. 1914–1918
An authentic French World War I trench art vase, formed from a brass military shell casing and hand-worked into a decorative object during the war. Pieces like this were created by soldiers during quiet moments in the field, transforming instruments of war into lasting expressions of craftsmanship and memory.
This vase features a delicately worked flower motif, set against a finely textured surface, with a gently flared base that gives the piece both stability and elegance. The contrast between the floral decoration and the shell’s original military form speaks to the heart of trench art—beauty created from destruction.
Sourced in France and dating to the First World War, this piece remains in original condition, bearing light surface marks consistent with age and use. Please note that the vase is not watertight, as a small hole remains in the base from its original construction.
A striking and meaningful historical object, ideal for display as sculpture or with dried florals.
