"Peace in Bloom" – WWI Trench Art Shell, 1919
Description
This striking piece of WWI trench art dates to 1919 and was crafted from a 75mm artillery shell casing, richly embossed by hand. A soaring dove—universally recognized as a symbol of peace—is etched into the brass above the bold numerals 1919, marking the first full year of peace after the Armistice. On the reverse, a tall floral motif climbs vertically, with leaves and petals carefully raised in relief. The bottom half of the casing has been expertly fluted—likely formed by hand while the shell was still warm from use—creating a flowing, sculptural effect that enhances its grace and presence.
Made from a French 75mm shell casing, this piece was likely decorated by a soldier either during or shortly after service in the trenches. Though the war officially ended in late 1918, many soldiers remained stationed overseas well into 1919, and the artistry of this piece suggests it may have been created during that transition period as both a reflection of memory and a celebration of survival.

On Similarities: At Belle Maison, you may see pieces with matching or near-identical floral or symbolic motifs—even if they were made in different years. This is not a sign of modern replication but a testament to the popularity of certain patterns among soldiers. Often, pairs were decorated together but separated over time. When we come across matching shells, we may sell them individually but include a “1” or “2” in the title to acknowledge their shared origin. All are authentic and individually hand-embossed.
